Pediatric Optometrist

Pediatric Optometrist

The offices of Dr. Evans and Carter in Chula Vista understand the importance of finding a trusted pediatric optometrist for your children. Regular checkups can ensure that eye health is progressing at the right pace and can catch any issues before they become a problem.
Glasses for kids
“The American Optometric Association guidelines recommend that all children have a complete vision and eye health examination at the age of 6 months, 3 years, upon entering kindergarten, and routine vision care (every 2 years) thereafter throughout their school years."  (http://www.aoa.org)
A pediatric eye doctor realizes that while infants may not be able to read, it is still important to examine the complex processes that deal with visual acuity, visual efficiency skills, and visual information processing. Catching any abnormalities early on will prevent school performance issues from vision-related problems. Prescribing glasses for kids, for example, can fix a lot of the issues that 25 percent of school-age students have.

What to Expect During a Checkup

At both our Chula Vista and El Cajon locations, we provide quality eye care for all ages. For the first eye exam, infants will have their pupils tested for response, have a fixate and follow test, and test their vision capabilities with preferential looking.
As children get older, the optometrist will perform an eye exam using the following tests:
  • LEA Symbols
  • Retinoscopy
  • Random Dot Stereopsis
  • Lazy eye
  • Alignment issues
  • Depth perception
  • Color vision
  • Focusing ability
  • Eyelid health
An eye examination may determine that a kid needs to see an optician for glasses, or an eye doctor may recommend other solutions to improve any issues. If glasses are necessary, our helpful staff is skilled in choosing frames, and can help pick out the prefect style of glasses to help your kids fit in at school.
