Five Ways You Can Relieve Computer Vision Syndrome

Five Ways You Can Relieve Computer Vision Syndrome

computer vision

Computer vision syndrome, known as CVS, is an eye issue related to our addiction to computers, notepads and smartphones, and we suffer from poor computer vision as a result. The offices of Dr. Evans and Dr. Carter Optometry see Chula Vista patients daily, and many of them complain about blurry vision, dry and strained eyes, headaches, light sensitivity, and neck and shoulder pain. These symptoms are signs that you are staring at your screens too long. Here’s what you can do.

  1. Blink and rest. You should blink 18 times a minute; you only blink four to five times when staring at a screen. Remind yourself to blink, and rest your eyes by looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes of screen time.
  2. Know the proper viewing distance. Make sure your screen is 20 to 28 inches from your eyes and that you’re looking down just slightly. About 4 to 6 inches from your center of vision will do.
  3. Be careful of glare. Don’t let any other light, including daylight, shine onto your screen. Use a glare screen when necessary and keep the room’s lighting soft.
  4. Wear your glasses. Wear the computer glasses your doctor prescribed. Make certain you are not causing yourself unnecessary strain and eye pain by refusing to put them on.
  5. See your optometrist regularly. See your eye doctor regularly. With scheduled vision checks, Drs. Evans and Carter can ensure there aren’t additional health issues causing your discomfort.
