Getting a regular eye exam may not seem like a priority, but it is important in order to continue good eye health and prevent vision loss. At Dr. Evans and Dr. Carter Optometry in Chula Vista, we recommend getting an eye check up every year or two.
During an eye examination, we will ask questions about issues that you have experienced, any blurry vision, overall health, and any current medications. Next, you will be given a vision exam which consists of a reading and wall chart. Along with vision testing, we will perform an eye function test. This evaluates color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, eye muscle capabilities, and how your eyes respond to light. We will also check to see how your eyes focus and work together.
Your overall eye health will be examined as well. Using a bright light and magnification, we will inspect the eyelids and eye. We also dilate the pupils in order to see the internal structures of your eye. Pressure is measured using tonometry, which helps indicate the presence of glaucoma. We will also perform a contact lens exam if you wear them.

When to Schedule a Vision Examination in El Cajon

Along with our main office, we are also located in El Cajon, to make it more convenient to schedule an optical exam. Children’s eye care should start at six months of age, and you should plan on a vision exam every two years between the ages of 20 and 30, then yearly exams are recommended.
You should make an immediate appointment for an eye checkup if any of the following symptoms occur:
  • Pain
  • Visual changes
  • New floaters
  • Flashes of light
  • Injury
  • Tearing
  • Blinking or rubbing eyes frequently
  • Headaches
These indicators may signify the need for an eyeglass exam or a contact exam, or they may be signs of something more severe.
